Faculty-authored chapter: "Playing with the Third Reich : sports, politics and free time in Nazi Germany," by David Imhoof. Part of a collection on everyday life in Nazi Germany, this essay explores the ways in which Germans used sports to make sense of Nazi ideas and the power of the Third Reich. Rather than assume that the Third Reich reshaped all free time activities, this essay shows that Germans actually used sports to help build the ideas and organizations that drove the Third Reich. Sports provided some Germans – though not Jews, leftists, or other so-called “state enemies” - a space to work with and sometimes against the Nazi regime.
