Quorum Sensing in Centralia, PA

Description

Begun in 1962, the mine fire in Centralia, PA has been producing many noxious gases such a Carbon monoxide and methane along with temperature reaching up to 53.4C. By using the setting of Centralia, PA, through this study I hope to find whether bacteria in extreme environments show differentiation through “communication” based on temperature. The type of communication that will be studied specifically is quorum sensing which uses auto inducers to send messages for biofilm formation, virulence and even antibiotic production within a dense population of bacteria. Through the use of DNA analysis from the samples sequenced by the Joint Genome Institute in 2014, possible genes correlated with quorum sensing were found that can be tested for the sample of 2017. The presence of quorum sensing within the 2017 sample has not be studied to show expression as of yet but the work done so far shows promising correlation for further study.
